Boy, 4, beats rare kidney cancer which was only detected after tripping over his Toy Story Slinky Dog
A LITTLE boy has beaten cancer — which was detected only when he tripped over his Toy Story Slinky Dog.
Alfie Powell complained of severe back pain after tumbling over the plaything’s coiled spring.
His mum, Emma Holden, 31, took him to hospital, where doctors noticed his tummy was unusually swollen and sent him for a scan.
They found out Alfie had Wilms’ tumour — a rare kidney cancer.
Cleaner Emma said: “The room started spinning. I could barely hear what they were saying after the word ‘cancer’, I was in so much shock.”
Alfie embarked on a gruelling six-month course of chemo in 2018 — spending Christmas on a cancer ward.
Emma, of Barnsley, said: “Alfie didn’t even want to get out of bed when Santa had been. He was so weak he couldn’t even walk some days.”
Alfie also had surgery to have the tumour and right kidney removed.
He was declared free of cancer just days before his third birthday in March last year.

It is thought the fall triggered pain from the tumour — and Alfie, four, still loves to play with his coiled canine.
Emma said: “Alfie always says, ‘Slinky Dog saved my life’, bless him! It was really surreal because he didn’t have any obvious symptoms before he tripped. I think we’ll always keep it.”
The family is now raising money for a new cancer ward at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, where Alfie was treated.
