A HERO who tackled the London Bridge terrorist plans to start a charity — when he gets out of jail.

Convicted killer Steven Gallant, who chased and helped pin down Usman Khan, wants to help rehabilitate fellow cons.

He has struck up a bond with civil servant Darryn Frost, 38. The pair famously battled the knife-wielding extremist in the capital using narwhal tusks exactly a year ago today.

The Sun on Sunday can reveal Gallant, 42, and Frost kept in touch and plan to continue the work of Jack Merritt, 25, and Saskia Jones, 23, who were killed that day.

Gallant, who we can also reveal is again out on day release, wants to help freed cons stay on the straight and narrow. He was jailed for 17 years in 2005 for the murder of Barrie Jackson, 30, in Hull.

But John Samuels QC, of the Prisoners’ Education Trust, said: “Steven has completely turned his life around while in prison. He deserves the opportunity to start a new chapter in his life.”

Earlier this year, Gallant’s sentence was reduced by ten months after an intervention by the Queen. And we can reveal Boris Johnson was also involved in the decision.

Gallant is now studying for a degree in management.
