A TORNADO has killed 51 people in China, in the eastern province of Jiangsu, according to state media.
Reports say the tornado formed near the city of Yancheng and have destroyed a large number of buildings in the province.
It is believed that many people have been injured and roads have been blocked.
Homes in Yancheng city were also flattened, according to official news agency Xinhua.
Over the past weeks, southern and eastern China has endured torrential rain and storms.
The freak weather has already caused flooding, which has resulted in a number of casualties.
The floods in central China have killed 22 people and displaced almost 200,000.
The Chinese government estimated that the economy lost around 2.7 billion yuan because of the flooding.
El Nino, a warm band of ocean water in the Pacific, will send horrendous weather conditions to China in the coming months, vice premier Wang Yang has said.
