Royal Mail customers will be able to drop off pre-paid parcels and letters at their local delivery office in a shake up aimed at helping small businesses and eBay sellers

From today Royal Mail customers will be able to drop off pre-paid parcels and letters at their local delivery office.

The firm said it was part of a range of initiatives to improve convenience and access to its network.

The move is mainly aimed at small businesses, online marketplace sellers, including those selling on eBay and Amazon.

Nick Landon, managing director of Royal Mail Parcels, said: “Customers can pick up their online shopping, collect parcels we tried to deliver while they were out, drop off parcels for delivery and obtain proof of posting if they need it, all under one roof.”

Around 100 of the busiest customer service points are open on Sundays which means people have an extra day to send their post.

Mr Landon added: “Now our Royal Mail Customer Service Points at our local Enquiry Offices are a hub for customers to access all of our time critical, safe and secure delivery services in addition to an already impressive network of postboxes and local Post Offices.”

Those who want to use the service can weigh parcels at home and buy postage online – attach stamps of the correct value and simply drop it off.

David Bracken, director at Stuff U Sell, one of eBay’s biggest sellers, told the being able to post items on a Sunday will “make a big difference.

He said: “Anything that makes it more convenient for people to sell things online is a good thing. For eBay sellers Monday is the busiest day of the week as people tend to buy things over the weekend when they’ve got time to look. If you’re working Monday to Friday being able to drop off parcels on Sunday will make a big difference.”

It is hoped the move will help those working from home and selling online

Mike Cherry, national chairman of the Federation for Small Businesses, that the move will help those working from home and selling online.

He said: “Small businesses rarely work nine to five, Monday to Friday. They work when they need to – to deliver for their customers. We’ve seen a surge in home based companies who are using the internet to reach new customers all over the world.”

Mr Cherry added: “Many of these businesses rely on the postal infrastructure Royal Mail provides and will welcome this step to being more flexible.”
