One in 14 human beings is now on Instagram: Photo app claims to have 500 MILLION users
The number of people who use image-based social network is almost 10 times bigger than the population of the UK
There are about seven billion people living on the face of this dear blue planet - and 500 million of them have an Instagram account.
The photo-sharing app has released stats which claim that half a billion people use it to showcase their selfie obsession to the entire world.
Some 300 million people use it every single day, whilst 80 percent of Instagrammers live outside the US.
It has been linked to a shallow culture where all that matters is how you look and, rather than the experiences you enjoy.
But it's also been held responsible for a youth culture that celebrates the idea of rather than tripping on hard drugs like grandma and grandpa.
"As you’ve captured and shared the moments happening around you, you’ve formed incredibly varied and diverse communities," the app said in a statement.
"Whether you’re an illustrator, a sneakerhead or an astronaut on the International Space Station, every photo and video you share helps bring people closer to friends and interests, broadens perspectives and inspires a sense of wonder. You’ve made Instagram a place where the everyday and the epic are always within reach.
"Thank you for your creativity, your openness and your passion for sharing your worlds with one another. We can’t wait to see what you create next."
Kevin Systrom, co-founder of Instagram, appears pleased to have helped to create a world where everyone walks around taking pictures of themselves.
"People like to think selfies are new," .
"But if you look at the history of art, what's one of the largest formats?"
"It's the portrait. Now everyone can be an artist.
"That sense of identity when you're growing up, remembering where you were and what you were doing, is nothing new. I think Instagram just makes it very easy.
"At the same time, we see lots of very impactful images being taken."
The most popular Instagram image of all time is a followed by a photo of the flowers Kanye West bought Taylor Swift after she gave him an MTV award.
In third place is a photo that's now deleted, which showed Tay-Tay on holiday with her short-loved boyfriend Calvin Harris.
