World leaders congratulate Joe Biden on his dramatic victory as he beats Donald Trump in the 2020 US election
WORLD leaders have congratulated Joe Biden on his dramatic victory in the US presidential election.
Victory in the battleground state of Pennsylvania put firmly over the crucial 270 electoral college vote mark with 273 to defeat Donald Trump.
Kamala Harris will become the first female Vice President of colour in US political history.
French president Emmanuel Macron was among the first to offer his best wishes.
He tweeted: "The Americans have chosen their President.
"Congratulations @JoeBiden and @KamalaHarris! We have a lot to do to overcome today's challenges. Let's work together!"
German Chancellor Angela Merkel said in a statement: "Congratulations! The American people have made their decision.
"Joe Biden will be the 46th President of the United States of America.
"I sincerely wish him the best of luck and every success and I would also like to congratulate Kamala Harris, the first female vice president-elect in the history of your country.
"I look forward to working with President Biden. Our transatlantic friendship is indispensable if we are to deal with the major challenges of our time."
Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he is looking forward to working with the new Biden administration on policies from climate change to trade and security.
Boris said: "Congratulations to Joe Biden on his election as President of the United States and to Kamala Harris on her historic achievement.
"The US is our most important ally and I look forward to working closely together on our shared priorities from climate change to trade and security."
The president of the European Council Charles Michel tweeted: "Congratulations to @JoeBiden and @KamalaHarris
"(The EU) is ready to engage for a strong transatlantic partnership.
"COVID-19, multilateralism, climate change and international trade are some of the challenges which Europe wants to address together."
Irish Tanaiste and former Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said he hopes President-elect Biden and Vice President elect Senator Kamala Harris will be able to visit Ireland in the near future.
He said: "Congratulations @JoeBiden and @KamalaHarris.
"Our world needs American leadership and true American values. We know you can give it. Hope you can both make it to Ireland soon."
'CONGRATULATIONS'
President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen also offered her warm congratulations to former vice president Biden.
She said: "I warmly congratulate Joe Biden on his victory in the US presidential election and look forward to meeting him at the earliest possible opportunity.
"The European Union and the United States are friends, allies, our citizens share the deepest of links.
"Together we have built an unprecedented transatlantic partnership rooted in common history and shared values of democracy, freedom, human rights, social justice and open economy.
"This partnership has underpinned the liberal rules-based international order for decades and remains a pillar of stability, security and prosperity on both sides of the Atlantic."
New Zealand prime minister Jacinda Ardern said her country will work "side-by-side" with the US under the new administration.
"The relationship between our two countries is strong, and I look forward to developing even closer relations with the incoming Biden administration," she said.
"The campaign by the president-elect has also shown the shared interests we have in addressing global challenges like Covid-19 and climate change.
"There are many challenges in front of the international community right now, the message of unity from Joe Biden positions us well to take those challenges on."
