England fans were soaking up the pre-match atmosphere ahead of tonight's fixture with Slovakia when they were set upon at around 7.30pm last night.

The cowardly thugs, thought to be from group of hooligans called the Bad Gones who support Olympique Lyonnais, were dressed all in black with red crosses on their arms.

The Three Lions supporters were taunted by the French yobs who threw bottles and chairs before police finally intervened.

Today those that witnessed the violence were quick to point out England fans were not to blame.

A barman at the Wallace pub, which was forced to close after the trouble, said: "It was locals, they are known around here for it.

"They call themselves the Bad Gones. They are hooligans who follow Olympique Lyon."

Established during the 1980s the gang – known as the Bad Gones and the Cosa Nostra Lyon – are notorious for their hatred of other fans.

One fan, Andy Johnson, 52 said: "They came here intent on causing trouble. We were just having a beer and singing a song then they turned up.

"The police were nowhere to be seen - it was obvious what was about to happen.

"I was worried they were going to ambush us down the backstreets, but fortunately they cleared off pretty quick.

"I'm really angry we are constantly being targeted and the police aren't protecting us."

Fortunately there were no injuries to England fans and no arrests were made.

Assistant Chief Constable Mark Roberts, the British lead for football policing, said French authorities had learned lessons from the violence of Marseilles as he praised the lack of violence in the city.

The Bad Gones occupy the north stand and the Costa Notra Lyon, occupy the south stand of the Parc Olympique Lyonnais stadium.

The gangs brag they have about to 2,500 members between them.

The Bad Gones are the club's most infamous supporters' group, and their name is spray-painted around the city.

The Bad Gones are twinned with fanatical supporters of Real Madrid, known as Ultra Sur, whose neo-nazi sympathies were exposed in the 2005 TV documentary and book ‘Diary of a Skinhead’.

In September last year [2015] the Costa Nostra Lyon displayed a flag saying; ‘Refugees Not Welcome’ at a home match against Lille.
