The 54-year-old asked them to move but they forced him to stop and then beat him from his bike.

Brian, a university health and safety engineer, said: "Someone smacked me on the back, hard.

"Then someone kicked my bike and suddenly there were two of them stood directly in front of me, forcing me to stop again.

"I asked again, 'can I come past?' and they just screamed in my face. No words, just screaming, then one of them started kicking my bike really hard."

The frightening confrontation happened as Brian was cycling home in Sheffield, South Yorkshire on Monday afternoon.

The teenage crew - thought to be members of the "Top Corner Gang" - started kicking Brian's bike, despite him asking them to stop, before one of them punched him in the face.

Brian said: "The next thing I knew, one of the two lads punched me without warning, really hard below my right eye.

"He punched me so hard that he completely knocked me to the ground.

"They all then ran off to the other end of the tunnel. As I picked myself up I realised that they'd smashed my glasses."

Brian suffered cuts and bruises to his face and legs but managed to ride out of the tunnel and contacted police who are appealing for witnesses.

The gang – known as the ‘Top Corner Boys’ – are well known in the city for donning face masks and gathering on street corners before committing shocking, and sometimes violent, crimes.
