A GREEN energy tycoon has managed to turn harmful greenhouse gases into valuable diamonds.
Former New Age traveller Dale Vince found a way to extract excess carbon from the atmosphere and compress it into precious gems.
Vince, 59, owner of green energy company Ecotricity and vegan football team Forest Green Rovers, has had his “sky diamonds” certified by the International Gemological Institute.
It has taken seven years of research at his lab in his home town Stroud, Gloucs, to refine the process, which he says is non-polluting.
Vince said: “Getting excess carbon out of the atmosphere is only the first step.
"We have to lock it up into an enduring form of carbon, otherwise it’s only a temporary solution.
"The most enduring form of carbon known to mankind is the diamond.
"I thought what if we could turn atmospheric carbon into a diamond? It seemed a bit crazy, but amazing if we could achieve it.

“We’ve been working on it for seven years and have a completely clean process - no waste products, no pollution.
"Everything we use comes from the sky, wind, sun, rain and excess carbon dioxide.
"In fact the air we put back into the atmosphere is cleaner than the air we take, because there’s less carbon in it.”
