Brave mum fights off mountain lion attacking son, five, in front garden

The child miraculously survived thanks to his mum's speedy reaction

A MUM fought off a mountain lion when it attacked her five-year-old son as he played with his brother in their front garden.

The woman ran outside when she heard screams and “physically removed her son” from the wild animal on Friday evening.

The boy, who has not been identified, was taken to hospital with head, neck and face injuries.

He is described as being in a "fair condition" as he recovers after the incident in Colorado, US.
His mum suffered injuries to her hands and legs.

After the attack, deputies and an officer with the US Forest Service found the animal and it was put down, police said.

Mountain lions are not uncommon in Colorado, but sightings are rare.

Advice on the Colorado Parks and Wildlife website reads: "People have fought back with rocks, sticks, caps or jackets, garden tools and their bare hands successfully.

"Lion attacks on people are rare, with fewer than a dozen fatalities in North America in more than 100 years.”

The authorities were attempting to find a second lion that was reported to be in the area earlier in the day.

Mountain lions are also known as pumas, cougars and panthers.
