Prince Charles’ posh food brand forced to recall soup over health and safety risk

The mislabeled soup could be dangerous to people with allergies

POTS of posh vegetarian soup made by Prince Charles's food brand Duchy Organic have been withdrawn because they pose a health and safety risk to the public.

Duchy Organic Spiced Carrot and Parsnip Soup sold by upmarket Waitrose at £2.99 a pot poses an allergy risk - as well as putting vegetarians off - after it was mistakenly filled with chicken and spelt broth.

The 600g soup had the chicken broth, which also contains gluten and celery, added and these ingredients are not declared on the label.

The brand was set up as a partnership between Waitrose and the Duchy Originals company - the business set up by the Prince of Wales in 1990.

The Chicken and Spelt Broth soup is one of its other products sold and it is believed the wrong soup was filled into the wrong packets.

A spokesman for Waitrose said: "As a precaution, this product is being recalled, as a small number of pots have been incorrectly filled with Waitrose Duchy Organic Chicken and Spelt Broth.

"The Chicken and Spelt Broth recipe contains gluten and celery which are not declared on the label, making the product unsuitable for anyone with an allergy to gluten or celery.

"Any customers who have an allergy to gluten or celery, or are vegetarian, should not consume this product but return it to Waitrose for a full refund.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused."

The Food Standards agency added: "Waitrose is recalling its Duchy Organic Spiced Carrot and Parsnip Soup with a use by date of July 1, 2016.

"A small number of packs have been incorrectly filled with Waitrose Duchy Organic Chicken and Spelt Broth, and therefore contains gluten and celery which are not mentioned on the label.

"This makes the product a possible health risk to anyone with an allergy to wheat (gluten) or celery.

"No other Waitrose products are known to be affected.

"If you have bought the above product and have an allergy to wheat (gluten) or celery, do not eat it. Instead return it to the store from where you bought it for a full refund."

For further information the company is urging customers to call Waitrose customer services department on 0800 188884.
