Floral tributes to murdered MP Jo Cox left near where she was shot and stabbed

Her constituents have been laying flowers near to the spot where the MP for Batley and Spen was attacked

Floral tributes to murdered MP Jo Cox  have been laid near the spot where she was shot and stabbed this afternoon.

The 41-year-old Labour politician died before she even reached hospital after she was shot three times - including once in the head - by a gunman.

Constituents have been laying flowers at a Joseph Priestly statue in Birstall, West Yorkshire, near to the scene where the MP for Batley and Spen was shot.

A 52-year-old man, named locally as Tommy Mair, has been arrested.

Cox was stabbed multiple times with a “foot-long knife” while her assailant shouted “put Britain first”.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has been joined in Parliament Square tonight by many MPs, some of whom entered the Commons last year along with Cox.

He described her as a “wonderful woman who stood for many things – human rights, peace and justice” and said she was an exemplary MP.

“We mourn and we are suspending all [referendum] campaigning activities until the weekend as a mark of respect,” Corbyn said.

“Hatred will never solve problems. Jo believed that.”
