EVIL child killer Roy Whiting feared he would be killed after being brutally attacked in prison with makeshift blades.
The Sun can reveal the extent of the injuries suffered by the monster after he was battered behind bars while serving life for the murder of Sarah Payne.
Whiting was punched and kicked in the face and repeatedly stabbed on the upper body with blades smuggled onto the wing at Wakefield prison, West Yorks.
A nurse who rushed to his aid in cell three on Delta wing found him with multiple stab wounds and not breathing on 8 November 2018.
He was in respiratory arrest so they inserted a plastic tube to give him an airway.
She stated: “I do believe that my actions on this day did save Roy Whiting’s life, due to the severity of the injuries he had received and the quick response having qualified medics on the scene.”
A prison officer who dragged Whiting’s attackers off him added: “I 100 per cent believe that if we had not entered that cell and drew our batons Whiting would be dead.
"The perpetrators did not stop stabbing Whiting until we managed to force open the door.”
Details of the attack can be revealed after convicted murderers Richard Prendergast, 40, and Kevin Hyden, also 40, both admitted a Section 18 wounding with intent via video link at Leeds crown court.
I 100 per cent believe that if we had not entered that cell Whiting would be dead.
They attacked the 61-year-old after sneaking into his cell at the Category A prison - dubbed Monster Mansion - and punching him with a makeshift weapon.
Whiting was then rushed to Leeds General Infirmary where he received emergency treatment.
Photographs of his injuries were later taken by bosses which show him with a burst lip, cuts to his face and two black eyes.
Whiting said two inmates burst into his cell shouting “you f***ing nonce” and then stabbed and punched him to the head and body.
He crawled under his bed in an attempt to protect himself during the attack, adding: “I looked down at the floor and I was laid in a pool of my own blood.”
He said he has never had any trouble with either of the defendants and is used to being called “nonce, paedophile and baby killer” by inmates.
Whiting said in a statement following the attack: “I have a couple of friends who I talk to but I do also get quite a lot of verbal abuse.
“They call be names such as nonce, rapist, child killer, I do try to ignore the comments as I have got so used to them now.”
Whiting said he was sat in his cell in his prison issue clothing when “two inmates came rushing into my cell with raised arms shouting ‘you fucking nonce'".
He added: “The two immediately began to stab and punch me to my head and body.”
One attacker was apparently shouting “stab him, stab him, get him in the neck”.
'POOL OF MY OWN BLOOD'
Whiting said: “I couldn’t feel the pain due to my adrenalin. After about three seconds I fell to the floor.
“I was then on the floor trying to defend myself. I was trying to kick out with my legs to defend myself.”
He said that every time he tried to get up they continued to attack him until he heard officers arriving.
He continued: “One of the males then attacked me again so I crawled under my bed for protection from the assault.
"I looked down at the floor and I was laid in a pool of my own blood. It was everywhere.”
Whiting said he then lost consciousness and was unaware of much that happened afterwards, but knew he was taken to hospital.
At hospital he was initially treated in A&E and then a trauma unit.
He was given a CT scan on his wounds to check their depth and had his spinal cord checked.
Whiting had a burst lip, two black eyes and a numbness to the side of his face.
His puncture wounds were glued and he was given paracetamol.
Whiting has been the subject of assaults numerous times since being jailed for life in 2001 for the abduction and murder of eight-year-old Sarah.
The schoolgirl had been playing hide and seek with her brothers in a field when she was abducted as she walked along a country to her grandparent’s home in Kingston Gorse, West Sussex.
The former mechanic dragged her into his van and murdered her before dumping her body in a field near Pulborough 15 miles away, where it was found on 17 July 2000.
The sexual predator was re-arrested the following February and charged with the kidnap and murder of Sarah.
MULTIPLE ATTACKS
Whiting was convicted in 2001 by a jury at Lewes Crown Court, after a four-week trial and sentenced to a minimum of 40 years in prison.
The images are the first time the brute has been pictured since 2011 when he left hospital in a wheelchair after being stabbed in the eye in a jail revenge attack.
The sicko was attacked by double murderer Gary Vinter who was armed with a sharpened toilet brush handle.
Vintner said he stabbed Whiting in both eyes because he is “a dirty little nonce”.
In 2002 murderer Rickie Tregaskis slashed his cheek with a razor blade, leaving a 6in scar.
And in 2017 Whiting was battered with a flask by another prisoner but did not need hospital treatment.
In 2015 Hyden was jailed for at least 32 years after being found guilty of the brutal murder of Davinia Loynton, 59, at a flat in Wellington, Shropshire.

Prendergast also received a life sentence with a minimum of 19 years in October 2018 after stabbing to death Lee Moody, 44, who he mistakenly believed had stolen his mobile phone at a house party in Worksop, Notts.
A CPS spokesman said: “We are satisfied these pleas to section 18 assault not only reflect the criminality but also provide the court with adequate sentencing powers to address this serious offence.”
