THE US government has been covering up evidence of UFO encounters for years, says the former Senate Majority Leader.
Harry Reid made the astonishing claim in the new documentary 'The Phenomenon' which is directed by James Fox.
“Why the federal government all these years has covered up, put brake pads on everything, stopped it, I think it’s very, very bad for our country,” he said.
“Are you saying that there’s some evidence that still hasn’t seen the light of day?” asked Fox.
“I’m saying most of it hasn’t seen the light of day,” Reid replied.
The film examines the history of UFO sightings in the U.S. and overseas including
It also details a 1967 report in which a mystery glowing object appeared over an American military base at the same time its missiles became inoperative.
“If they had been called upon by the president to launch, they couldn’t have done it,” Reid said in the film.
His comments emerged just hours after at the possible existence of UFOs.
He spoke after it was revealed a new Pentagon task force is being set up to investigate reports of "unidentified aerial phenomena".
was asked whether are real while being quizzed by Maria Bartiromo on Sunday Morning Futures on Fox News.
"Mr President, as we wrap up here, are there UFOs?" she asked.
He replied: "I'm going to have to check on that."
Reid was among those behind the classified and now closed Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP).
The secretive Defense Department unit was devoted solely to investigating unexplained phenomena and aerial encounters.
Since leaving office in 2017, Reid has become increasingly outspoken about the subject of Unidentified Flying Objects.
In April, after the Pentagon released three startling "UFO" videos taken by US pilots, Reid tweeted: "The American people deserve to be informed."
In August he added he wanted the issue to be studied but said "we must stick to science, not fairy tales about little green men."
Reid told the documentary: "Nobody has to agree why it’s there. But should we at least be spending some money to study all these phenomenon? The answer is yes."
Three videos documenting so-called "unexplainable encounters" were released by the Pentagon featuring footage shot between 2004 and 2015.
A Department of Defense spokesperson said at the time: "The U.S. Navy previously acknowledged that these videos circulating in the public domain were indeed Navy videos.
"DOD is releasing the videos in order to clear up any misconceptions by the public on whether or not the footage that has been circulating was real, or whether or not there is more to the videos.
"The aerial phenomena observed in the videos remain characterized as 'unidentified.'"
The 2004 video shows the USS Nimitz "Tic Tac" incident, shot by pilot Chad Underwood.
Some footage from the encounter was released in 2017, but DOD then released the full clip -
The incident unfolded during carrier group exercises in the Pacific, off the coast of Mexico, with six pilots in total spotting the strange sight.
They described seeing a "Tic Tac-shaped" object about 40 feet long hovering some 50 feet above the water.
One baffled pilot who spotted the UFO said: "It would go from like 50 feet off the ground... it looked like it was just hovering over the water.
“But there was no method of propulsion that was keeping it airborne: no wings, no heat, keeping it airborne or aloft.”
Between 1947 and 1969, the U.S. Air Force investigated more than 12,000 reports of UFOs.
A study - called Project Blue Book - later concluded most could be explained by stars, clouds or spy planes.
However, more than 700 of the sightings remained unexplained to this day.
One incident included an object which appeared over Malmstrom Air Force Base in Montana at the same time as 10 ICMB missiles went offline.
Robert Jamison, a retired USAF nuclear missile officer, revealed the missiles deactivated after red-glowing UFOs were spotted nearby.
