Out-of-control car smashes through steel fence and into a primary school playground

Vauxhall Astra came to a halt on playground hopscotch — but luckily no children were at school

THESE dramatic images show the damage caused to a children’s playground after a car ploughed through a wrought iron gate into the schoolyard.

Fortunately no kids were playing in the area when the black Vauxhall Astra careered off the road at 5am this morning.

It had fallen around 18 inches from a raised pavement into the playground of St Matthias Primary School in Burley, Leeds.

A green wrought iron gate lies strewn on the floor with shattered glass littering the ground.

Thankfully the vehicle came to a stop before it hit the school’s stone building.

One witness described how the smashed up car came to rest on the playground’s hopscotch.

They said: “The car has been very badly damaged.

"The suspension has collapsed and it looks like a write-off to me."

It is not known whether anyone was hurt in the accident.

West Yorkshire Police put up signs at the incident reading "Think! Parking here could endanger a child's life".

The police have been contacted for comment about the incident.
