The mass group broke the rule of six and failed to socially distance at the event last night.

It is believed to have been filmed at Essex University - however a spokesperson there said their security team is "confident this is not on our campus", but encouraged all students to behave responsibly.

It comes as coronavirus cases soar at universities all over the country as freshers mingle and struggle to stick to the rules.

Yesterday we told how Sheffield and Manchester universities have reported more than 854 cases.

It was revealed 474 students and five members of staff have tested positive at the University of Sheffield - with more than 380 cases at Manchester.

Sheffield has also seen a sharp increase from 91.8 to 233.1, with 1,363 new cases - as youngsters from the university were seen out partying in the city.

Last week around 1,700 students in Manchester Metropolitan University's Birley campus and Cambridge Halls were told to self-isolate "with immediate effect" after freshers hosted parties.

PHE and Manchester City Council said in a joint statement that a "local lockdown" would be imposed on the two halls after a "spike" was detected in accommodation blocks.

Students in Newcastle has been seen hitting the town as cases rise, with one telling the Sun: "I just want to get on with everything because we know this doesn't really affect us. It's OK for us to spread it between ourselves."

COVID CASE RISE

Universities all over the country are in the grip of a mass coronavirus outbreak as lecturers plan to strike over face-to-face teaching.

Students across Britain are stuck self-isolating in pokey flats as positive cases rise to more than 2,600 youngsters and staff.

Durham University has confirmed there has been more than 70 cases of coronavirus at the institute since the start of term.

A total of 69 students and one member of staff have tested positive for the virus in the week leading up to Sunday, October 4.

It takes the overall total of cases since the start of term to 79, with three members of staff and 76 students testing positive for the virus.

University towns such as Nottingham, Sheffield and Oxford could be plunged into lockdown "in days" after missed coronavirus cases were counted.

It comes after Public Health England admitted on Sunday they had missed 15,841 cases from their official stats - with daily infection rates shooting up to a record high of 22,961.

Professor Neil Ferguson, of Imperial College London, said the most important measures were reducing contacts between households.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today programme, he said that with schools and universities open ways needed to be found to reduce contacts in other areas, such as an "extended half term" or closing hospitality venues.

Prof Ferguson added: "So we are in a more difficult position, if we want to keep schools open we have to reduce contacts in other areas of society by more.

"You will have heard measures being discussed across society as a whole such as extended half terms where we try to reduce transmission for a concerted period.

"I think those measures should be considered."
