THE “most consequential election in American history” drew to a close on Nov 7, as Joe Biden edged ahead of Donald Trump to take the win.

What happened on Election Day?
The closing times for polling stations varied from state to state and in some cases by town and city.
The first polls closed at 7pm EST on November 3.
Following the , the new president is typically announced that evening when , although this has not happened in 2020.
A delay in the result is due to increased mail-in ballots during the coronavirus pandemic and some states being too close to call.
Votes were still being counted on Friday, November 6.

Biden’s campaign slammed Trump saying it was a “naked effort to take away the democratic rights of American citizens”.
He added that “it’s not over to every vote is counted”.
In 2016 the election was called at 2.30am EST when won Wisconsin pushing him over the 270 votes he needed to win.
However due to increased postal ballots because of , this has not happened in 2020.
Ballots sent in by mail are yet to be counted in some states, with many being received on Election Day, the last possible time a vote can be cast.

The final result could still be days away, however, it could be called earlier.

A state is “called” by major media outlets when they believe one candidate has an unbeatable lead.
These predictions are provisional until a result from the mail-in ballots has been determined.

When will the rest of the swing state results be announced?
