Who is Hunter Biden?

Hunter Biden is the second son of Democratic President Joe Biden.

Hunter was seriously injured in a crash that killed his mother and younger sister, Naomi, in December 1972.

The Yale graduate and lawyer has come under scrutiny after a range of controversies have come to light.

In December 2020, it was revealed that his conduct was being probed by the FBI.

Notably, the son of the US president was accused of serving the "strategic interests" of China's government and military while he served as a board member of Beijing-based investment firm BHR Partners.

Hunter also served on the board of Ukrainian gas giant Burisma between 2014 and 2019 which paid him $50,000 monthly, according to .

And in March 2020, he again made headlines after missing a child support deadline regarding a child who the court ruled was his.

In an  from October 2019, Biden acknowledged that he had "done estimable things and things I regret,” but insisted he was in “probably the best place I’ve ever been in my life.”

However, in November 2019, he was accused of smoking crack while in Washington, DC.

Joe Biden has confirmed that Hunter would not pursue any business opportunities that could cause issues while his father is president.

What are the trafficking claims?

There are also reports allegedly linking Hunter to sending "thousands of dollars" to Russian and Ukrainian women who lived in the US.

Senate Republicans released an 87-page report on his work with Ukrainian gas company Burisma on September 23, 2020. 

The report found that two Obama administration officials, Amos Hochstein and George Kent, were concerned back in 2015 that Vice President Joe Biden’s Ukraine policy would be a conflict of interest with Hunter’s ties to the gas company. 

The report also claims that Hunter sent money to women who have “subsequently wired funds they have received from Hunter to individuals located in Russia and Ukraine”.

According to the report, some of the transactions appear to be linked to an “‘Eastern European prostitution or human trafficking ring.’”

What federal charges is Hunter Biden facing?

On June 20, 2023, Hunter Biden was including tax-related misdemeanor counts as well as gun possession.

Hunter Biden's attorney, Chris Clark told : "Hunter will take responsibility for two instances of misdemeanor failure to file tax payments when due pursuant to a plea agreement."

On September 14, 2023, Biden was indicted in a Delaware federal court on gun charges. On October 3, he pleaded not guilty to the gun charges.

Hunter was hit with nine additional charges on December 7, 2023, specifically related to taxes.

The criminal case was brought against him by special counsel David Weiss.

Hunter is facing three felonies and six misdemeanors, including failure to file and pay taxes, evasion of assessment, and false or fraudulent  returns.

The charges involve at least $1.4 million in taxes that Hunter owed between 2016 and 2019 - during which Hunter has admitted to struggling with addiction.

Is Hunter Biden married and does he have kids?

Hunter is married to South African filmmaker Melissa Cohen.

The pair wed in May 2019 in Los Angeles. Their son Beau, named after Hunter's deceased brother, was born the following year in March 2020.

It is Biden's second wife after his marriage to Kathleen Buhle in 1993.

He shares three children - Naomi, Finnegan, and Maisy - with Kathleen.

The couple separated in 2015 and divorced in 2017.

In 2016, he began dating Hallie Biden, the widow of his brother, Beau.

Biden was hit with a paternity suit in May of 2019 by Arkansas woman , 28, who claimed he was the father of their 18-month-old child.

In January 2020, a court ruled Biden was the father, and he agreed to pay child support in the paternity case.

What is Hunter's net worth?

Hunter lives in a Los Angeles mansion worth a reported $2.5 million (£2 million) with his wife Melissa.

Biden's board position with Burisma Holdings reportedly netted him up to $50,000 a month.

He took the position in April 2014 and stayed on the board until early 2019, giving him the capacity to earn at least $3 million during that time.

Biden co-founded Rosemont Seneca Partners in 2009 and partnered with a Chinese investment company to fund Chinese private equity firm BHR Partners in 2014.

He held a board position and a stake in the firm.

In 2006, Hunter Biden, together with his uncle James Biden, acquired hedge fund group Paradigm Global Advisors making an annual salary of $1.2 million, according to .
