"England fans (and many French people too) climbing fences to avoid Russian supporters."

Jamie Vardy’s wife Rebekah took to Twitter to denounce the way authorities dealt with the incident: “That has to be up there with the worst experience EVER at an away game!

"Teargassed for no reason, caged and treated like animals! Shocking!”

She tweeted shortly after: "I witnessed this with my own eyes!

"I can't comment on things I didn't see but what I got caught up in was horrific and uncalled for!"

Fears for England fans have prompted an outcry of reminders for those in the area to stay out of harm's way, with Joe Hart saying "be safe, stay here" after the match.

According to French reports, Russian fans have been detained in the stadium in an effort to avoid any further confrontations outside.

But there were more dramatic scenes on the streets as French police again fired tear gas at supporters as trouble threatened to flare.

Meanwhile, witnesses inside the stadium have claimed Russian supporters managed to smuggle a firework past venue security.

Many others have complained there were barely any police in the stands.

Before the match began, fans complained the two sides were not suitably segregated, with a blue tarpaulin the only thing separating England and Russia fans.

Following the second attack of the day, dozens of Twitter users have called for Russia to be stripped of the 2018 World Cup.

The attack comes after two England fans were left fighting for their lives and 20 more were hospitalised when Russian hooligans brawled with Three Lions supporters and riot police ahead of the tense Euro 2016 match.

The carnage erupted in the ancient port of Marseille as up to 30 masked Russians in black t-shirts descended on England fans drinking outside bars while the French National Guard waited on standby with riot gear.

Shocking scenes saw the English fans retaliate by throwing back chairs and bottles of Heineken at the yobs from Lokomotiv Moscow and the French riot officers.

Officials launched tear gas canisters at the brawlers in an attempt to disperse the violence.
