Sally formed off of the coast of south on September 12.

Analysts predict it could grow into a hurricane capable of striking the U.S. Gulf Coast in the coming days.

The National Hurricane Center said the storm surge could be "dangerous."

According to tho NHC, Tropical storm force winds are likely to begin in southeastern Louisiana and southern Mississippi on September 14.

How will Tropical Storm Sally affect the weather?

New Orleans and surrounding areas, along with a stretch of the coast from Grand Isle, Louisiana, to the -Florida line, have been placed under hurricane watch.

Sally's maximum sustained winds were clocked at 40 mph (65 kph) with higher gusts.

The storm crawled into the Gulf at 8 mph, heading in a west-northwest direction.

“Life threatening storm surge is possible along the Gulf Coast beginning on Monday, and a Storm Surge watch is in effect for areas outside the southeast Louisiana Hurricane and Storm Damage Risk Reduction System from the Mouth of the Mississippi River to the Alabama/Florida border,” the National Weather Service said in a  released Saturday.

On September 12, Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards declared a state of emergency in advance of the tropical storm.

“Make sure that you do what is necessary to prepare for Tropical Storm #Sally,” he tweeted, "and heed the warnings of local officials."
