We put new grocery service from web giant to the test

Amazon Fresh launched this week and rated it against its biggest competitors

WITH Amazon joining the grocery delivery business we decided to put it to the test against its biggest rivals.

The online giant launched its Amazon Fresh same-day deliveries this week in central and east London, with ambitions to go nationwide.

Our order for five providers was lamb chops, two litres of milk, orange juice, a loaf, an avocado, six eggs, basil, a bottle of wine, doughnuts and a large Galaxy bar.

Sometimes we had to buy more to reach a minimum spend limit. Here we rate each delivery out of five for speed, price, service, range and freshness to come up with a winner.

MATT QUINTON brings the scores.

OCADO: 19/25

Speed: First delivery slot was in 21 hours and 50 minutes (next day). 3Price of basket: £22.98 (minimum order £40).   2
Service: Staff were polite and the order arrived perfectly on time.    5
Range: Everything was available and order arrived with no substitutions. 5
Freshness: All pretty much perfect. Although the doughnuts were “best before” the next day’s date that seemed to be because they had been baked that morning. A nice free tea towel was thrown in as a welcome gift.    4

MORRISONS: 18/25

Speed: First available slot was in 22 hours and 10 minutes (next day). 2
Price of basket: £19.61 (but £40 minimum spend). 3
Service: Undoubtedly the most polite staff – arriving on time and even offering to carry the bags to my fridge. 5
Range: Doughnuts were not available online so had to be replaced with muffins. 3
Freshness: The basil was due to expire the next day but other than that this was a brilliant selection – and they even threw in a most delicious gingerbread man as a thank you for my order. 5

TESCO: 17/25

Speed: First delivery slot was in 22 hours and 40 minutes (next day)  . 1
Price of basket: £17.59 + £6 delivery charge + £4 “minimum basket charge” for orders under £40.  5
Service: It arrived half an hour early, which could have been inconvenient.  3
Range: Everything was available online and all arrived with no mistakes or substitutions. 5
Freshness: All was satisfactory, with lots of time left before most items’ best before dates. The doughnuts, however, were dated for the same day. 3

ASDA: 12/25

Speed: First delivery slot was in 19 hours and 10 minutes (next day). 4Price of basket: £18.14 + £5.50 delivery charge (minimum spend for online delivery is £40)4
Service: Arrived on time but low on charm. 1
Range: Offered everything online but, on delivery, Galaxy bar and doughnuts had been substituted for Galaxy Ripple and eclairs. 1
Freshness: The quality was high apart from the eclairs, which had “use by” date of the next day and looked greasy and quite unappetising. 2

AMAZON: 12/25

Speed: First delivery slot was in 6 hours 30 minutes. 5

Service: On time but not so polite, just businesslike.  2
Range: Had to take blueberry muffins instead of doughnuts but all items arrived OK. 3
Freshness: Muffins were “best before” next day, bread’s date was in two days and the “fresh” basil was a bit limp. 1
