The rare glimpse into the Russian president’s private life happened as Putin admitted to Lukashenko he hadn’t gone to bed until 3am – apparently unaware that his microphone was switched on before a press conference in Minsk.

Lukashenko asked: “Is all ok?”

Putin replied: “It’s ok. But I sleep very little. The day before yesterday I slept for four hours. And last night I slept for five hours…really little.”

Putin – who prides himself on his image – continued: “I went to bed at 3am and I had to wake up at 8am.”
