World War One-themed roundabout with tank covered in turf is named best in Britain
A GROUNDBREAKING roundabout with a World War One theme has been named Britain’s best.
The Flanders Roundabout has a tank covered in turf, flanked by trees and wildflowers.
Its so-called turbo design uses red markings to keep drivers in lane, allowing right-hand turns even from the left lane.
The system is used to quickly funnel traffic from busy roads to smaller routes.
It also features eight Tommy soldier silhouettes and was picked from hundreds of contenders by the UK Roundabout Appreciation Society.
Society president Kevin Beresford said the junction of the A2070 and Romney Marsh Road, in Ashford, Kent, won unanimously.

He said: “I personally feel this splendid traffic island with its moving memorial message perfectly sums up what is great about the great British roundabout.”
It will now feature on the front cover of the Best of British Roundabouts 2021 calendar.
The Herne Bay beach roundabout, also in Kent and featuring beach huts, a boat and a lighthouse, was chosen as runner-up.
