Extraordinary dashcam footage shows the moment an elderly man drove round a roundabout the wrong way.
Driving instructor Paul Kilpatrick, 43, was stunned when the man, who is thought to have been in his 80s, slowly performed a three-point turn in the middle of the junction once he had realised his mistake.
The shocking video shows dozens of cars watching in amazement as the “bewildered” pensioner took around a minute to reverse his silver Honda Jazz back into position.
There were no injuries or arrests as a result of the calamitous incident in Windsor, Berkshire last Wednesday.
Paul, who was giving a lesson to a teenage girl, praised his learner for staying calm during the episode.
He said: "I've seen some crazy things in my 17 years as a driving instructor, but this was right up there.
"The man in the car looked to be in his 80s and he just looked bewildered to be honest. He was totally lost and it could have been really dangerous.
"The girl who was driving my car stayed very calm and actually closed off any space he could have moved into.
"If he had kept going round the wrong way it would have been even more dangerous for everyone nearby.
"It was as if time stood still when he very slowly reversed and made his turn. You could see the cars queuing up and waiting for it to be safe again."
Paul was preparing his 17-year-old student for her upcoming test when they were confronted with the clueless motorist.
Amazingly the experienced instructor told the teen to slowly approach the wayward car to stop the driver going any further in the wrong direction.
Paul, who runs Clearway Driver Training, said: "It might seem strange to say to drive towards it, but that was the best thing to do.
"We were just heading towards Dedworth and as we came down the slip road and I approached the roundabout, I could see the silver car in the distance.
"As it came in from the left it proceeded to turn right towards us and cut across a couple of lanes going in totally the wrong direction.
"The thought process was that surely he wouldn't try to drive through an oncoming car, and so it proved.
"If we had just stopped dead in our tracks, he would have went even further the wrong way and ran into more traffic.
"The girl dealt with it very well. This is one of the routes we use to practice for the test, but hopefully nothing like this happens on the day.
"I feel a bit sorry for the elderly man driving, because he clearly shouldn't be behind the wheel. It was painful to watch.
"I would support some form of re-testing for all drivers. I appreciate cars are a life line to some older people but the safety of road users has to come first."
Thames Valley Police has confirmed officers were called following reports of dangerous driving in Maidenhead Road in Windsor on 1 June at 1.29pm, although no arrests were made.
