Paramedics were called to Lewsey Park Swimming Pool in Luton, Beds., at 10.26am to reports of a child being unconscious and not breathing.

The swimming teacher performed CPR while an ambulance was called and thankfully the first paramedics were on the scene in two minutes.

A spokesman for Luton Borough Council, who are dealing with the incident, said: "The incident at Lewsey Pool happened during a school swimming lesson.

"The swimming teacher rescued the child from the water as soon as she noticed he'd become unresponsive.

"CPR was administered while an ambulance was called.

"Both the paramedics and the school staff have praised the swift response and emergency medical assistance given by the Active Luton team."

The East of England Ambulance Service sent two ambulances and two additional paramedics.

A spokeswoman for the service said she believes a defibrillator was at the premises as CPR was administered there.

The air ambulance were also alerted but the boy was taken by land ambulance to Luton and Dunstable University Hospital who were on standby waiting for his arrival.

The pool was closed shortly after the incident and was later reopened at 5pm.
