At least three drivers have been rescued by fire fighters as their vehicles are submerged in water
THIS is the bizarre moment that a misguided motorist decided to drive down a flooded road, only to get stuck halfway across.
In a shocking video, a blue Vauxhall car comes speeding down a flooded street in Wallington, South London.
While another car decides that the flooded road is too dangerous to cross, the driver of the Vauxhall decides that he can cross.
Onlookers watch as he confidently drives into the water.
But the driver has misjudged the depth of the flood as his car is all but submerged in the water.
A giant wave hits the roof of the car as he ploughs into the massive puddle.
The car then starts to float down the road, as a man in a transparent poncho runs past.
The crazy clip has been viewed over 500,000 times on Facebook.
The man who uploaded the video captioned the clip: “What happens when you listen to drunk people”.
The incredible video comes after multiple motorists had to be rescued from their vehicles in the flash floods this afternoon.
Dramatic scenes were captured in Wallington, South London, where a number of cars became submerged in water.
One man was pictured neck-deep in water as he escaped from his car in what the London Fire Brigade called a “mad half hour” with around 100 flood calls.
A spokesperson said the man, who has not yet been identified, was checked over by medics at the scene but he did not need to go to hospital.
Bystander Paul Jolly said he watched as people were forced to flee when the street suddenly began to flood.
He said: “It started off with a little bit of rain.
“Cars obviously tried to make it through under the bridge and then suddenly it was like the world was ending.
“Three cars got caught, people were being dragged out.”
London Fire Brigade confirmed they had been called to a number of incidents across South London.
A Brigade spokesperson said: “Our 999 control officers have been extremely busy this afternoon taking calls to storm-related incidents across the capital.
“Firefighters are attending a number of incidents, mainly due to flooding.
“Crews rescued someone from a car that was almost completely submerged by flood water in Wallington.”
He added that their engines can be used to help rescue people trapped by flood water, pump water away and protect properties.
Some of the fire brigade’s rescue units are equipped with inflatable rescue boats.
High volume pumps are also stationed at strategic locations across London for pumping large amounts of water away from flooded areas.
Scattered thundery showers are likely to continue throughout London overnight, with most of the city expected to be dry by tomorrow morning.
A Yellow Warning of rain for South East England, Central Southern England and also southern parts of The Midlands and East Anglia was issued by the Met Office this afternoon.
A spokesperson said: “Whilst most places will miss the worst, please be aware of the risk of localised flooding, with lightning presenting an additional hazard.”
