A specialist cleaning company was then drafted in to deep clean the room, which was taken offline and marked unavailable, but the rest of the hotel stayed open.

The room is now available for booking again.

A Travelodge spokesperson said: “It has been reported to us that a guest staying at our Birmingham Maypole Hotel last week has subsequently tested positive for the Covid 19 virus.

"As a precaution, the room the guest stayed in was immediately taken offline. It will remain offline for a period of time before a specialist cleaning team is deployed.

It comes after a Yorkshire pub was forced to close after four customers tested positive for the bug.

The local authority confirmed that customers of The Black Horse in Tollerton, North Yorkshire fell ill between July 30 and August 3.

NHS Track and Trace were informed and identified all close contacts to tell them to self-isolate for 14 days.
