A passenger train has smashed into the back of a freight train travelling on the same line, killing at least three people and injuring 40.

The numbers of dead and wounded are expected to rise after the “very violent” collision near the Belgian town of Hermalle-sous-Huy  in the south of the country.

The passenger train was travelling between Leige and Namur early on Sunday morning.

Witnesses say the smash has completely destroyed the two trains, and emergency services have been drafted in from the surrounding area to help the injured.

While the exact cause of the brutal crash are not yet known, authorities have so far confirmed that the passenger train caught up with a goods train travelling ahead of it.

Francis Dejon, mayor of Saint-Georges-sur-Meuse municipality, confirmed the current toll of dead and injured but has warned it is “likely to change”, Belgian news site Le Soir reports.
