FORMER Stanford University swimmer Brock Turner was arrested in 2015 after he was seen on top of an unconscious woman outside of a fraternity house.
The case sparked a nationwide debate about sexual assault and how wealthy white men were treated by the justice system.
Who is Brock Turner?
Brock Allen Turner is a former college student who sexually assaulted an unconscious woman outside a Stanford University fraternity house party in 2015.
He was born on August 1, 1995, in Dayton, Ohio.
Turner graduated from Oakwood High School in 2014 and later went on to attend a prestigious college in California - Stanford University.
At the time of his arrest, Turner was a 19-year-old freshman who was enrolled on a swimming scholarship.
What did he do?
Prosecutors say Turner sexually penetrated a 22-year-old woman with his finger on January 18, 2015.
According to police, prosecutors, and a jury, the victim lacked the capacity to give legal consent.
Two bystanders witnessed Turner carrying out the horrifying attack outside a dumpster and pinned him down until police arrived.
The victim, who was rushed to the hospital, remained unconscious and unresponsive for several more hours.
In March 2016, a jury found Turner guilty of three charges: sexually assaulting an intoxicated victim, sexually assaulting an unconscious victim, and attempting to rape her.
But although prosecutors had sought a six-year term for his crimes, Turner was only sentenced to just six months.
Positive character letters written on behalf of Turner from his family members and friends, Turner's lack of a prior record, and the role that alcohol played in the assault factored into Judge Aaron Persky's decision to impose a lighter sentence than the prosecution had asked for.
Persky was widely criticized for leniency and was eventually removed from office by voters in 2018.
How long was he in jail for?
Turner was in jail for three months instead of six because of the .
The Act states that offenders in California sentenced to time in county jail are eligible to cut their sentences in half at an accelerated rate, as long as they behave.
When the judge in Turner's case announced he was inclined to sentence him to six months, Deputy District Attorney Alaleh Kianerci urged him to reconsider, noting that six months "really means three months in county jail," CNN .
What did Brock Tuner's dad say?
A letter from Brock Turner's father, Dan Turner, compounded anger over the case at the time, after he said his son should not have been jailed for "20 minutes of action."
“His life will never be the one that he dreamed about and worked so hard to achieve,” Dan Turner wrote in a letter arguing that his son should receive probation, not jail time.
He continued: “That is a steep price to pay for 20 minutes of action out of his 20 plus years of life.”
When did his victim speak out?
For years, Turner's victim was referred to as Emily Doe in an effort to protect her identity.
But in September of 2019 she revealed her identity as Chanel Miller.
She also released a book titled "Know My Name," which is about feeling defined solely as the anonymous victim of something terrible that happened one night in 2015 while Turner’s supporters often characterized him during the trial as a multi-dimensional young man with potential.
Her book gives Miller the chance to present herself not just as a victim but as a full human being: a sister, a daughter, a girlfriend, an amateur stand-up comedian, and a visual artist.
Know My Name has been selected as a summer reading for Duke University's class of 2024.
Previously, Miller gave a moving statement at Turner's hearing in 2016 - speaking powerfully about the severe impact that night has had on her life.
Part of the statement reads: "He has done irreversible damage to me and my family during the trial and we have sat silently, listening to him shape the evening.
The letter continues: "You have dragged me through this hell with you, dipped me back into that night again and again.
"We have all been devastated, we have all been trying to find some meaning in all of this suffering. Your damage was concrete; stripped of titles, degrees, enrollment.
"My damage was internal, unseen, I carry it with me.
"You took away my worth, my privacy, my energy, my time, my safety, my intimacy, my confidence, my own voice, until today."
