And in one major hint, the 38-year-old donned the "Husband Shirt" for the engagement - a £175 piece designed by her friend Misha Nonoo.

The excursion to the Invictus Games in Toronto, Canada, was just two months before the couple announced their engagement.

An excerpt from the biography Finding Freedom has now claimed the couple were already engaged when they stepped out together for the Invictus Games event.

It wasn't until November 2017 that they officially announced the news, with Prince Harry saying it had happened "a few weeks ago" at their cottage.

Meghan then added they had been having a "cosy night in", saying: "[We were] trying to roast a chicken and it just - just an amazing surprise, it was so sweet and natural and very romantic.

"He got on one knee."

In the interview with the BBC, Prince Harry then added: "She didn't even let me finish, she said 'can I say yes, can I say yes' and then were was hugs and I had the ring in my finger and I was like 'can I - can I give you the ring?' She goes - 'oh yes the ring'.

"So no it was - it was a really nice moment, it was just the two of us and I think managed to catch - catch her by surprise as well."

The couple tied the knot at Windsor in May 2018 - conducting a string of engagements before announcing they were stepping down as Royals.

And a series of claims have been made about the couple's decision to quit in the new biography authored by Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand.

It was today claimed that the duchess moaned "I can't win" after being scolded by the Royal Family for wearing a necklace with the initials “H” and “M” on it.

The Suits star had been spotted wearing the £184 14-karat gold necklace, believed to have been a gift from Prince Harry, while shopping in Toronto in 2016 – a month after their relationship was revealed.

A source claimed: “She was advised that wearing such a necklace only served to encourage the photographers to keep pursuing such images - and new headlines.”

The source added she spoke “very little” on the call and instead decided to just “simply listen to the counsel”.

Bombshell book claims include:

She later felt “frustrated and emotional” after hanging up and the conversation was “too much”, according to the source.

Extracts from the book, Finding Freedom, were published in People and Meghan is said to have “felt damned if she did and damned if she didn’t”.

The book claims Meghan sent secret love messages to Harry via Instagram before their relationship was made public.

Authors say she made her feelings known in subtle ways while the pair were apart - like posting a photo of her dog Guy wearing a Union Jack jumper.

Meghan also hinted at their blossoming relationship by posting a photo of Love Hearts sweets saying "Kiss Me" with the caption "Lovehearts in #London" - a possible message to Harry.
