UK coronavirus daily death toll RISES on a Saturday for the 3rd week in a row as 61 new deaths are recorded

CORONAVIRUS fatalities in the UK have RISEN for the third Saturday in a row as 61 new deaths have been recorded in the last 24 hours.

The latest increase in Saturday figures come as indoor gyms, swimming pools and sports facilities in England have reopened their doors.

This is the third Saturday in a row there has been an increase in the daily death toll - after 40 deaths were recorded last Saturday and 21 were tallied on July 11.

A total 45,738 people have now sadly died from the killer bug.

Today's coronavirus death tally is lower than it was yesterday when 123 more people died from the bug.

Zero new deaths were recorded in Scotland for the ninth day in a row.

In Wales, no new deaths were also recorded.

Northern Ireland is no longer publishing its coronavirus statistics over the weekend.

In English hospitals, the total number of Covid-19 deaths rose to 29,272 today - up 25 from yesterday.

NHS England confirmed the patients were aged between 52 and 93 years old and all had known underlying health conditions.  

A total of 298,681 people have now tested positive for Covid-19 across Britain - up 767 cases from yesterday.

The Department of Health has not confirmed today's new death figures reported by PHE as Matt Hancock has called for an urgent review into how health chiefs calculate those killed by the bug.  

Boris Johnson has said coronavirus will be with Britain until the "middle of next year".

Mr Johnson admitted the Government could have handled the pandemic "differently" but denied he had been too slow in going into lockdown.

Yesterday, it was reported that outbreaks in care homes are at their highest levels in a month.

The latest data from Public Health England shows Covid-like illnesses in care homes have gone up in the country.

In the week from July 13 to 19, there were 145 outbreaks of "acute respiratory infection" in care homes around England - up from 128 the week before.

Care homes haven't seen such a high number since the week of June 15 to 21 when there were 176 outbreaks.

The spike in outbreaks raises fears that the decision to reopen care homes in England has come too soon.
