Husband Diego Rodrigues, 24, said she had been showing flu-like symptoms for some days before testing positive for coronavirus on June 12.

She was taken to hospital on June 26 when her condition worsened, before being transferred to the hospital in Botucatu the next day where she went into labour.

Husband Diego said: “I was in the surgery room and they were taking the first baby out. [Larissa] saw that wonderful little face and I was really emotional, that was her dream.”

Diego said the second child was born later after a small complication and he then said goodbye to his wife to accompany the newborns, thinking everything was okay.

But he was then told that Larissa suffered a haemorrhage and needed a blood transfusion.

He said: “She had a haemorrhage and wasn’t managing to pull through. After that, she suffered a cardiac arrest and needed a blood transfusion. At around 6am they told me that she did not pull through and had died.

“The doctor said that because of Covid her body could not take it.”

The grief-stricken new dad added: “I am distraught, I can’t get her out of my head but I know God has a plan for our lives.

“God let her leave two little angels for me to look after, to give me strength. I cried so much when I first saw them, it was the most beautiful thing.”

Diego had previously tested positive for coronavirus but was given the all-clear and is staying with his twins in the hospital until they are discharged.
