TikTok star Addison Rae accused of ‘blackfishing’ by making her skin appear darker with makeup
TIKTOK star Addison Rae has been accused of “blackfishing” in videos by making her skin appear darker with makeup.
Social media users have called out , after she posted a clip of herself getting her done, as her skin tone looks darker than her normal complexion.
The term “blackfishing" is a trend in which people alter their appearance in order to present themselves as Black.
It goes as far as changing their hair texture and tanning their skin darker than what it is and wanting to capitalize on desirable Black features — but ignoring the struggles that Black people face.
One Twitter user : “so are we just not gonna talk about this extremely popular influencer with a huge platform taking part in black face.”
"nobody’s talking abt addison rae switchin up ethnicities on us," someone else .
“im biracial and that photo of addison rae is darker than me,” another user . “regardless of if its intentional blackface, its not her skin color, its disrespectful.”
“people want black hairstyles, a darker complexion, but not the discrimination [people of color] go through everyday. y'all see the issue right ?”
Some people supported Addison, saying she appears to tan easily and that her social media app filters made the photo appear darker than it was.
“She's not changing her skin tone though, you're acting as if she is trying to be black, she is just tanning which is a normal thing to do,” .
“If this counts as racism I don't what doesn't anymore, she is certainly not trying to offend anyone. She is just simply tanning her skin.”
Addison’s controversial video that showed her getting her makeup done has since been deleted from the platform.
The 19-year-old, who has more than 48million followers on TikTok and 2.4million followers on Twitter, hasn’t appeared to respond to the accusations on social media, and did not immediately return The Sun's request for comment.
