Who is David Frost? Chief Brexit negotiator and national security adviser

DAVID Frost has been locked in negotiations to help the nation secure an historic Brexit deal after years of wrangling.

But who is David Frost and what is his background? Here is what we know.

Who is David Frost?

David Frost is a British diplomat who served a number of high-ranking roles including negotiations with the EU post-Brexit.

On June 28, 2020, Boris Johnson announced that Frost would take over from Sir Mark Sedwill as National Security Adviser in September.

Frost became Johnson's Europe adviser and chief negotiator for the talks on the UK’s future relationship with the EU in July 2019.

Frost leads a team in the Cabinet Office which prepared the government’s negotiating mandate and he leads the negotiations with the European Union post-Brexit.

What is David Frost's background?

Frost began his career in politics when he joined the Foreign Office in 1987 where he was posted to the British High Commission in Nicosia, Cyprus. 

In 1993 he was posted to the UK Representation to the EU in Brussels for Economic and Financial Affairs. 

He was then posted to the UK Mission to the United Nations where he covered Human Rights and Social and Economic Affairs.

Frost returned to the UK where he was successively appointed as the Private Secretary to the Head of the Diplomatic Service. 

From 2001 onwards he worked in the British Embassy in Paris and continued his diplomatic work as the Head of the EU Department and then the Director for the European Union in the Foreign Office.

What does the National Security Adviser do?

The National Security Adviser serves as a chief adviser to the Prime Minister and the Cabinet on all national security issues. 

National security issues include both national defence issues and UK foreign relations.

The NSA job was created in May 2010 as part of the reforms that saw the creation of the National Security Council. 

The Council oversees all issues related to intelligence, defence strategy and national security.
