A TOP university has been forced to remove "sexist" advice about their graduation service from their website.

The University of Edinburgh was blasted after a post advised female students to buy a £785 clutch bag to store their "lippy and smartphone".

Female students were advised to buy handbags costing almost £800 for the graduation service in an email newsletter sent to them ahead of the ceremony

Twitter users slammed the post, attributed to luxury shop Harvey Nichols and included links to the store's website , as "sexist and classist" as well as "grim".

The post read: "Girls, this is your time to invest in some sophisticated glamour. think, French chic meets New York business and you'll get it right.

"Like the boys, put your money into a garment or look at one that has longevity that you can dress up and down to suit any social/business occasion.

"A little black dress from a brand like Carven or Iro would be spot on, and go for killer accessories: Gianvito Rossi heels and a clutch with personality to store your lippy and smartphone.
