Top university removes ‘sexist’ Harvey Nichols article which told female students to purchase £785 bag ‘to store your lippy and smartphone’
Twitter users slammed Edinburgh university for the post on social media branding it 'sexist and classist' as well as 'grim'
A TOP university has been forced to remove "sexist" advice about their graduation service from their website.
The University of Edinburgh was blasted after a post advised female students to buy a £785 clutch bag to store their "lippy and smartphone".
Twitter users slammed the post, attributed to luxury shop Harvey Nichols and included links to the store's website , as "sexist and classist" as well as "grim".
The post read: "Girls, this is your time to invest in some sophisticated glamour. think, French chic meets New York business and you'll get it right.
"Like the boys, put your money into a garment or look at one that has longevity that you can dress up and down to suit any social/business occasion.
"A little black dress from a brand like Carven or Iro would be spot on, and go for killer accessories: Gianvito Rossi heels and a clutch with personality to store your lippy and smartphone.
"Remember, image is everything!"
Writer Natasha Preskey took to twitter to slam the article tweeting: "So this graduation dress advice from is grim."
She later added: " impressed that they managed to straddle both sexism and classism here... Harvey Nichols?!"
Dr Brooke Magnanti also tweeted: " 'Remember ladies to carry your lippy in an expensive little bag and not shove it down your bra OK?'"
Twitter user Nick Davies slammed the article tweeting: " Is this advice from from 1961?"
User Ideas Whittler took particular issue with the phrase "image is everything" raging: " makes you want to burn it all down and start again. worst phrase: "image is everything!" ugh"
Students received a link to the article via an email newsletter sent out ahead of the ceremony.
The article contained a link back to the Harvey Nichols website flogging New York fashion brand Proenza Schouler products for up to £745.
A University spokesperson said: “It is not our normal practice to promote or advertise any external companies or services. The page had not gone through the correct approval process and has since been taken down.”
