The 62-year-old's voice is heard warning passengers to "mind the gap between the train and the platform" on PA systems at most stations.

Phil presented a daily shown on BBC GMR (now Radio Manchester) in the 80s and was a regional TV newsreader.

He and his wife Elinor Hamilton later set up a voice-over artist company.

Writing on their Facebook page, Elinor wrote: "Phil Sayer - voice of reason, radio and railways. A dearly loved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.

"We are sorry to announce that this service terminates here."
