THIS is the incredible moment a heroic shopkeeper manages to see off an armed robber - by smashing a jar of DOG BISCUITS down on his hand.

The footage shows the dad-of-two throwing the jar at the yob, hitting him square on the hand.

The shopowner then grabbed a large ball of string to defend himself with which was shredded by the incredibly-sharp knife when the robber made another lunge at him.

The 38-year-old newsagent resorted to picking up his wooden chair to fend off the robber - who eventually fled empty handed along with a lookout who was keeping watch.

Amazingly the businessman escaped the drama with only a small cut to his right hand.

Cops have launched an investigation into the raid which happened at the Premier convenience store, in Christchurch, Dorset, on Saturday night.

Mr Karakus, who is originally from Turkey and has owned the business for 10 years, said he was sitting behind the counter working on his laptop when the masked raider burst in shouting "give me the money".

He said: "I looked up and saw this large knife pointed at my face.

"The guy was wearing a balaclava and he was trying to stab me with this knife. All I could pick up was the glass jar of biscuits I have for the customers' dogs.

"I backed away and pretended to chuck it at him to try and make him back off and when he came round the side to get behind the counter I did throw it.

"I think I hit him with the jar but he came back at me again and lunged at me.

"I grabbed this big ball of string but that was sliced to bits by the knife. I was lucky that I wasn't stabbed."

After seeing the terrifying footage the dad says he "started shaking" and only now realises how close he came to being seriously injured.

When he called 999 the Dorset police helicopter was scrambled to search for the raiders.

Two men, a 24-year-old man from Christchurch and a 21-year-old man of no fixed abode have since been arrested on suspicion of robbery and released on bail.
