A KNIFE attack in Glasgow in which a suspect was shot dead and six people - including a cop - were injured is not being treated as terrorism by police.

The officer stabbed at the Park Inn Hotel on West George Street is in a critical but stable condition, Police Scotland Assistant Chief Constable Steve Johnson said.

What happened in Glasgow today?

Six men are being treated in hospital, including a 42-year-old cop, after a stabbing attack in Glasgow that resulted in a man being shot dead by police.

The Scottish Police Federation (SPF) has confirmed the cop was stabbed.

The other wounded victims were men aged 17, 18, 20, 38 and 53, said the SPF.

Police Scotland said the male suspect was fatally shot by an armed unit at a hotel used to housing asylum-seekers and refugees.

A police update did not mention other fatalities. Earlier reports had suggested three people, including the suspect shot by police, had died.

Four people were seen being taken away in ambulances, says a witness

Photos of the rampage show heavily armed police at the scene outside the Park Inn in West George Street.

It is believed the stabbings took place in the stairwell of the Park Inn Hotel.

Officers were on the scene within two minutes of reports at 12.50 pm, with armed police arriving shortly afterwards.

A spokeswoman for campaign group Positive Action In Housing said the 91-room hotel was housing asylum seekers for the Mears Group, a housing and social care provider. which moved them there during the coronavirus lockdown.

Sky News' Scotland correspondent, James Matthews, said he spoke to someone inside the hotel who said he heard males and females screaming this afternoon.

On his way to the reception, he noticed the lift was covered in blood.

The man then saw the male receptionist had been injured, and was “covered in blood and was gasping for air.

"He said there was a second male receptionist on the exterior steps of the hotel and he was also injured and was gasping for air."

Assistant Chief Constable Steve Johnson said: "Armed police officers attended the incident and I can confirm that a male suspect was shot by an armed officer.

"I would like to reassure the public that at this time we are not looking for anyone else in relation to this incident.

"I can also confirm that a police officer was injured while dealing with the incident and that officer is receiving treatment in hospital."

A witness told Sky News she had seen people covered in blood and armed police attending the scene at around 12.15pm.

Witness Craig Milroy, who saw the bloody aftermath from an office building nearby, said he had seen four people taken away in ambulances.

Milroy said that he "saw a man lying on the ground, with no shoes on.

"He was on the ground with someone holding his side - I don't know if it was a bullet wound, a stab wound, or what it was."

Milroy said the man was one of the four taken away by medics and believed him to be a victim of an attack.

He added: "After that we saw commotion, ambulances further up and we saw armed police all running into the hotel next to the Society Room.

"We were still standing outside; after that the police all came down, the riot police and triage team told us to go back in and lock the door."

Greater Glasgow Police said: “Emergency services are currently dealing with an incident on West George Street in Glasgow.

“The street is currently closed off and the public are asked to avoid the area at present.

"The situation is contained at this time and there is no danger to the general public.”

The Scottish Police Federation tweeted: “We are aware of reports a police officer has been stabbed in an incident in #Glasgow city centre.

“Our officials are in attendance to provide all necessary support.

“Please allow our [colleagues] the space to do their jobs."

First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon tweeted: “Please follow advice to avoid the West George Street area of Glasgow while @policescotland deal with this ongoing incident.”

Home Secretary Priti Patel said: "Deeply alarming reports coming from Glasgow.

"Please follow police advice and avoid the area. Thoughts are with the emergency services as they continue to respond to this incident."

Where is West George Street in Glasgow?

There is a heavy police presence on West George Street with more than a dozen police vehicles in attendance.

A traffic information bulletin issued by Glasgow City Council said: "Due to a serious police incident the following roads are currently closed until further notice.

"West George Street - between Hope Street and West Nile Street.

"Renfield Street - between West Regent Street and St Vincent Street.

"Renfield Street traffic is being diverted onto West Nile Street and road users should avoid the area if possible."

Police Scotland Assistant Chief Constable Steve Johnson said: "We are continuing to deal with the incident on West George Street [in] Glasgow and would ask people to avoid the area.

"However, I would like to reassure the public that this is a contained incident and that the wider public is not at risk."
