Fed-up homeowner resorts to hanging warning sign outside his house after his £250k dream home becomes a nightmare

A FED-UP homeowner resorted to hanging a warning side outside his house after his £250k dream home became a nightmare.

Jake Wright moved into his house with wife Chloe in December 2018 but faced "nothing but problems" as the garage kept flooding and water seeped through the walls even after contractors allegedly fixed it.

Jake, from Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire, since hung a huge sign outside his house from an upstairs window reading: "Buying a Bellway Home was our worst decision. Please ask us why."

The couple spent £248,000 on the house from the property developer, which threatened legal action if they do not remove the sign.

It insisted it is working hard to fix the issues and that the sign breaches “restrictive covenants entered into at the point of sale”.

But despite reporting the issue soon after moving in, Jake said a contractor supposedly fixed the issue months after - and a few weeks later the garage was flooded again.

Jake told : “Another couple of men came out and said they knew what the issue was and that it was related to the brickwork.

“So we let them fix it. They told us they would have to dig up about half of our garden, but we agreed because we wanted it sorted.”

The work allegedly took four weeks and most of it was completed only days before he and Chloe got married in November 2019.

And when they were honeymooning in Singapore, Jake's mother-in-law told them revealed their nightmare was not over because the garage flooded again.

He claimed the dispute with Bellway resulted in the National House Building Council (NHBC) inspecting the building.

Bellway since suggested to built a drain in the garage but Jake said that "isn't really fixing the problem."

He said: “The NHBC ruled in our favour and said that the building wasn’t up to standard.

“They now want to install a drain in our garage which isn’t really fixing the problem. It’s just putting a bandage on something that was a problem at the start.

“It’s just one thing after another. We’ve been going back and forth. Me and my wife have had arguments and we’ve been so upset.

“We’ve now been told that they aren’t going to flatten the garden anymore, despite telling us they were going to as an apology”.

A spokesperson from Bellway said: “While we are unable to comment specifically due to customer confidentiality, we have been working hard to resolve the issues the customer has faced, and we continue to undertake remedial work over and above our warranty commitments.

“Our legal representatives have written to the customer in order to request the removal of the signage, which is in breach of the restrictive covenants entered into at the point of sale."
