Did the FBI investigate rumors that Ilhan Omar married her brother?
REPRESENTATIVE Ilhan Omar has been the subject of unfounded rumors that she married her own brother to help him move to the United States.
The rumors claiming that Omar was married to two men and one of them was her brother started on conservative blogs in 2016 after she successfully ran for office,
, 38, a representative for Minnesota, has become famed for Donald Trump's attacks on her and a group of fellow Congresswomen known as 'The Squad.'
Why do people claim Ilhan married her brother?
Right-wing bloggers claimed that Omar is married to two men for immigration fraud purposes, and one of them, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, is her brother.
Omar shot down these allegations as "disgusting lies."
Omar was engaged to in 2002, however, the congresswoman said that she and Hirsi did not legally marry until 2018.
She and Hirsi split in 2008, but reunited in 2012, even though Omar was legally married to Elmi until 2017.
Two FBI agents reportedly held a meeting last October after a concerned source handed over documents in relation to her 2009 marriage to Elmi.
They were said to discuss the claims that Omar married Elmi, a British citizen, so he could obtain a green card and study and work in the United States.
Although agents were said to pass on the information to Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Department of Education, government agencies have not confirmed the existence of an investigation or the potential to open one in the future.
Marriage fraud convictions are punishable by five years in jail and a fine of up to $250,000.
Trump has previously said: "There was a lot of talk that she was married to her brother. I don't know anything about it.
"I heard she was married to her brother. I don't know, but I'm sure there will be someone who will be looking into that."
How many siblings does Ilhan have?
Omar is the sister of fellow politician , one of the first Muslim women to be elected into the United States congress.
The sisters reportedly have three other brothers, making her the youngest of five.
, the first blogger to accuse Omar of marrying her brother for green card purposes, has come out saying that he is fearful of his life as a result of his claims.
Osman called in Minneapolis cops after Malyun Ali, a woman known to Omar posted a YouTube video reportedly loaded with shocking insults about him. claims that YouTube has since removed the video.
On the clip, the woman, named Malyun Ali, reportedly asked members of Omar’s Majeerteen clan: "What is wrong with you?"
"Why are you not protecting us from this nasty man who is composed only of a head and a stomach.
"You Majeerteen men…why don’t you defend us from this person…this fat ram who gets money taken from the taxes we pay...Why don’t you stop this crippled dog?"
Last month, Osman, 40, claimed Omar had married her own brother to allow him to get student loans in the US.
He told DailyMail.com: "I am very worried and I am very scared."
What happened to Ilhan’s father?
Omar recently announced on Twitter that her father, passed away due to complications from coronavirus.
"Surely we belong to God and to Him shall we return," Omar wrote in a statement. "It is with tremendous sadness and pain that I share that my father, Nur Omar Mohamed, passed away today due to complications from COVID-19."
"No words can describe what he meant to me and all who knew him. My family and I ask for your respect and privacy during this time."
Omar, who was , came to America as a refugee with her father and siblings in 1995 by way of a Kenyan refugee camp and resettled in Minneapolis, where she later became a US citizen.
On the eve of her swearing-in as the first Somali-American Congresswoman in 2019, Omar shared a photo of her and her father walking through Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Virginia.
She told CNN the next day that walking through Ronald Reagan was an "emotional moment" for the pair.
"As we exited our planes, we realized that him and I had not returned (to) that same airport since the day we first landed here as refugees," she said then.
"It's a very -- really overwhelming and emotional time for us," Omar added. "I don't think -- as my dad said, he had high hopes for us about the opportunities we would have when we came to this country. But I don't think he imagined that some day his baby would be going to Congress just 20 years after we arrived here."
What is Ilhan’s role as Minneapolis's member of the House of Representatives?
Omar won a Minnesota seat in the House of Representatives in November 2018, becoming the first Somali-American legislator in the US.
The mom-of-three successfully overturned a 181-year ban on headwear in the House, allowing her to wear a hijab for her oath of office.
