The clap is spearheaded by the Together campaign — a coalition of organisations asking us all to applaud NHS staff and key workers.

In a letter, it calls for July 5 to become a day where people say thanks.

On July 4, the campaign is also calling for Brits to mark a minute silence and light a candle in their window to remember all those who have lost their lives.

The clap is backed by figures including Baroness Doreen Lawrence and TV host Gary Lineker.

Founder Annemarie Plas, 36, said: "Thursday nights were a moment to show our appreciation but also became a moment to check-in with our neighbours and have some human contact.

"I hope we can make 5th July a day which unites us in a countywide ‘Thank You.’"
