His favourite idea is to greet each other using Mr Spock’s famous hand gesture, where the palm is raised with the middle and ring fingers parted.

Prof West told The Sun: “It means live long and prosper — so in the current situation it is particularly apt.”

The sci-fi fan, from University College London, is on a committee which advises Government ministers on behavioural science.

He reckoned: “I don’t expect it to catch on. I think it’s too hard.

“I can do it but I’ve had practice.

“It would be quite fun if it caught on and life could imitate art. I think it would certainly raise a smile.”

Professor West said he believes encouraging alternative ways of greeting could reinforce the norms about social distancing for the future.

Commenting on how he believes the UK has dealt with the coronavirus pandemic, Professor West added: “I agree with the other behavioural scientists and have been impressed with the way everyone has pulled together.”
