But one donation to our Virgin Money Giving page stood out.

The big-hearted reader, who asked to remain anonymous, donated £1 and wrote: “I wish I had more to donate.

"Sadly, I don’t. I only have £4 in my account. Thank you all and God bless you.”

Our appeal was launched to benefit NHS Charities Together, to help NHS staff fighting Covid-19.

Like intensive care staff at hospitals in Darlington and Durham who needed a water cooler.

Their spokeswoman said: “Like every other charity, we have cancelled event after event after event which means fundraising income that would normally go to support and enhance patient care and staff well-being is not coming in.

“But with money from NHS Charities Together we have been able to help 7,500 staff at eight hospitals and 80 community locations as they deal with coronavirus.

Give now to The Sun's NHS appeal

BRITAIN’s four million NHS staff are on the frontline in the battle against coronavirus.

But while they are helping save lives, who is there to help them?

The Sun has launched an appeal to raise £1MILLION for NHS workers. The Who Cares Wins Appeal aims to get vital support to staff in their hour of need.

We have teamed up with NHS Charities Together in their urgent Covid-19 Appeal to ensure the money gets to exactly who needs it.

The Sun is donating £50,000 and we would like YOU to help us raise a million pounds, to help THEM. No matter how little you can spare, please donate today here: .

“We bought welfare packs for staff working long shifts and bought 70 iPads so patients on 52 wards can talk to loved ones.

“Also we have a request for a plumbed-in water cooler so staff in the intensive care units wearing PPE all of the time and getting very hot can have cold main water, rather than luke-warm bottled water.

“The Sun’s appeal makes possible simple things like this that make life easier.”
