Man facing extradition to the UK over deaths of 39 migrants found in refridgerated lorry remanded in custody in Ireland

A MAN facing extradition to the UK accused of the manslaughter of 39 migrants who died in a refrigerated lorry has been remanded in custody in Ireland.

Ronan Hughes, 40, was detained on Monday following the execution of a European Arrest Warrant.

The Vietnamese nationals were found dead in a lorry container on an industrial estate in Grays, Essex, last October.

Hughes, 40, of Tyholland in Co Monaghan, also faces a charge of conspiracy to assist unlawful immigration.

His extradition hearing is due to be held in Dublin on May 1.

Trucker Maurice Robinson, 25, of Craigavon, Northern Ireland, has admitted manslaughter.

Eamonn Harrison, 22, of Mayobridge, Northern Ireland, is set to appeal against his extradition on the manslaughter charges.

A further hearing in Harrison's case will be held in Dublin on May 7.
