Engineer Andy, 34, has now gone through the £2,000 barrier and added hooped earrings to his ears in homage to jailed Joe.

Andy, 34, of York, said: "I’ve had a mullet for God knows how many years.

"I watched the Tiger King along with everyone else and my pals thought it would be hilarious if I cut my hair and bleached it.

"I'm at home in lockdown, I'm not going out and about so I thought, why not?

"I bought a Tiger King t-shirt from eBay and then got the bleach. My mates were egging me on so I said if they could raise £100 I'd do it.

"It took them no time at all - so I had to go through with it.

"From there on in things escalated very quickly. I cut my hair on Friday night - shaving the sides - and did my tash and bleached the hair.

"I promised to add the earrings if the total got to £2,000 so I pierced them myself. I'll get a Tiger King tattoo next if it hits £3,000.

"A mate of mine thought it was so funny he ordered me a Tiger teddy online and had it delivered to my house."

Andy, who works for Nestle, added: "I’ve been blown away by the support, it's crazy."

He has since received donations from all over the world.

The Netflix documentary which inspired his new hairdo has broken all records on the streaming service after 34million people watched it in just ten days.

It follows the crazy life of Joe Exotic, a former big cat owner who is now serving 22 years in a US jail for a "murder for hire" plot to kill a rival.

Andy added: "He had the right intentions to start with but money, drugs and greed obviously got hold of everyone in the animal world.

"Unfortunately, it looks like he's been stitched up with it.

"Everyone's guilty of animal cruelty and crime on the programme. It seems a shame that he got 22 years for doing something all the others had done."

All of the cash Andy raises will be donated to the NHS, to help manufacture personal protective equipment (PPE) during the Covid-19 pandemic.
