Boris Johnson saw first-hand the courage of our NHS – now he must strain every sinew to get them more PPE
BORIS Johnson’s personal tribute to the NHS was deeply moving.
Staring death in the face, he saw first-hand the courage and dedication of our frontline heroes. We have no doubt that the experience will shape his decisions for months and years to come.
But British doctors and nurses don’t have months and years.
This outbreak has already cost 39 of them their lives — and that will inevitably climb in the grim weeks ahead.
Which is why the Government and the private sector must strain every sinew to get them the personal protective equipment they need before it’s too late.
We understand that’s easier said than done: supplies are limited. But if British manufacturers can make thousands of ventilators in a matter of weeks, they can come up trumps again, given pressure and incentives from the top.
Otherwise, hundreds of our NHS heroes won’t survive this pandemic. Applause and tributes won’t cut it any more.

Loan danger
THE economics couldn’t be simpler: if British businesses can’t get hold of cash soon, we are facing the deepest recession in living memory.
Yet in the gruelling month since Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced that the Government would be bailing out businesses, fewer than one in 70 of more than 300,000 loan inquiries have resulted in cash being approved.
We get that the loan scheme presents a massive administrative challenge.
But given that millions of livelihoods are hanging in the balance those figures are downright pitiful.
If greedy banks are refusing loans to ordinarily healthy firms, the Chancellor must demand that they do so NOW.
Or if the quango handling inquiries is creating a bureaucratic bottleneck, the Government must step in.
In Switzerland, business owners have reported receiving funds within minutes of completing a one-page form.
If they can make it work, then why on earth can’t we?

Care heroes
THREE cheers for the brave care home workers looking after Britain’s forgotten coronavirus victims.
Millions rightly gather at their windows every Thursday to clap frontline NHS staff.
The organisers say they are hailing “healthcare workers, emergency services, armed services, delivery drivers, shop workers, teachers” and so on.

But home and residential care staff are not singled out for praise.
These underpaid men and women have cared for an estimated 1,000 residents who have died with Covid-19, putting their own lives on the line just like doctors and nurses in hospitals.
It’s time we said thank you.
