Next to shutdown online operation from tonight after staff raised concerns about working in warehouses and stores

HIGH street fashion retailer Next will close its online operation and warehouses from tonight after staff raised concerns about working during the coronavirus crisis.

The clothing company said online orders and distribution centres will be temporarily shut down after workers expressed fears about coming in during the Covid-19 lockdown.

Staff had expressed their fears about pickings goods and working in shops during the coronavirus lockdown, the company has said.

In a statement on Thursday evening, the company said: "NEXT has listened very carefully to its colleagues working in Warehousing and Distribution Operations to fulfil Online orders.

"It is clear that many increasingly feel they should be at home in the current climate.

"NEXT has therefore taken the difficult decision to temporarily close its Online, Warehousing and Distribution Operations from this evening, Thursday 26 March 2020.

"NEXT will not be taking any more Online orders after this time until further notice."

The announcement UK's coronavirus death toll has jumped 113 in one day to 578 as Britain continues to be gripped by the deadly disease.

There are also 11,658 Covid-19 cases in Britain - up from 9,529 by the end of yesterday.

On Monday, Next announced its 700 stores will temporarily close from 6pm until further notice. 

Next joins a long list of businesses that have been forced to close doors due to the coronavirus epidemic.

Debenhams and The Entertainer announce dthey were keeping stores shut for the foreseeable to protect customers and staff.

Nando's and Costa Coffee have also joined McDonald's in closing down restaurants due to COVID-19.
