Who is speaking at today’s government coronavirus press briefing?


THE government will hold the latest coronavirus press conference virtually from Downing Street today.

Prime minister Boris Johnson will be speaking on Thursday with Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Deputy Chief Medical Officer Jenny Davies.

Who is speaking at today's coronavirus press briefing?

Thursday's briefing will see Rishi Sunak unveil the government's new measures to help the self-employed.

Downing Street announced that the conference will take place virtually, which means no media will be present and that they will dial in with questions.

The briefing is expected to commence at around 4.30pm.

What happened in yesterday's briefing?

Prime minister Johnson addressed the nation on Wednesday ordering them to follow government rules and stay at home to save lives.

The main pieces of information to come out of the briefing were:

  • 405,000 people have signed up to volunteer with the NHS.
  • Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty blamed global shortages for the fact the government is not carrying out more coronavirus tests.
  • Whitty said the coronavirus pandemic was "probably manageable" for the NHS if people obeyed the rules.
  • Boris Johnson said he was willing to introduce legislation to outlaw profiteering.
