Coronavirus crisis sees Uber suspend Pool service in US and Canada in fight against killer bug

THE coronavirus pandemic has seen Uber suspend its Pool service in the US and Canada amid the global pandemic.

Pool previously allowed up to three passengers who were traveling in the same direction to share a car to save money on their fare.

But the ride-hailing company has suspended its feature in both countries due to the pandemic, which has killed at least 86 Americans and infected 4,482 people.

Although regular rides and Uber Eats are still available as of March 17, Uber said it's willing to adjust these as well as cities and counties deal with emergency mitigation measures.

As the World Health Organisation, US President and Canadian Prime Minister - who is - encourage people to practice social distancing, it would appear Uber is playing their part.

Uber said it would monitor its services in other countries on a case-by-case basis going forward.

As of Tuesday morning, the Uber Pool option was listed as "unavailable" on the app - but that's not the only measure the company are taking.

Uber has urged people to "travel only when necessary" in both Canada and the US, as well as urging users to wash their hands before and after they ride in an Uber to protect their drivers.

The carpooling company is also waiving delivery fees for independent restaurants in both countries after eateries and bars shut down en masse to curb the spread of the virus.

GrubHub and Postmate have also suspended commission from impacted restaurants.
